At UFC 145 from Philips Arena, reigning champion Jon “Bones” Jones dominated former training partner “Sugar” Rashad Evans in the light heavyweight championship fight and elbowed his way to a unanimous decision to retain the belt.
“It felt great,” said the champ. “Rashad is an awesome opponent. He punches hard. I respect Rashad a lot and was intimidated a little bit to rely on my own skills.” Read more >

Atlanta lost a local legend this week. North Carolina native Furman Bisher, a longtime columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and most recently for SCNI, passed away at the age of 93 from a heart attack.
Bisher’s writing certainly provided a massive influence within the Atlanta sports community, but his impact went way beyond his penmanship. As someone whose career began when this city was still a small town of sorts, Bisher was one of the instrumental forces in altering the sporting landscape in Atlanta, changing it from that of a small and largely ignored market to the booming professional sports city it is today.

Furman Bisher died this week at the young age of 93. I loved the man. Period. He was my mentor during my 13-plus years at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and I never met someone with so much energy in his later years.
He was one of the greatest sportswriters to ever live and if he ever would have gone into fiction writing he would have been up there right beside Hemmingway, who also cut his spurs on sports. Read more >

Last year was a humbling experience. I am sure there were a few people scattered amongst the millions of us who filled out brackets last season who picked UConn to win the national title or Butler to make another final game. But most of us did not and our office pools were a mess by the final weekend.
No. 11 seed VCU and eighth-seeded Butler made the Final Four, while traditional powers UK and UConn rebounded from unimpressive regular season to join them in Houston. It was one of the most unpredictable Final Fours in the history of the tournament.
But let’s remember that 2011 was not a normal tournament year. In this space last year, I urged you all to rely on favorites to make the semifinals but not to pick all No. 1 seeds. I also reminded you that, while you want to pick a few underdogs (nine seeds or lower) to make noise, you generally want to end their runs by the Elite Eight.

It is a debate that three years ago was laughable. Now it is a debate that we might need to start having, especially if the Giants are able to knock off the Patriots next Sunday: Is Eli Manning better than his older brother Peyton?

What a shame.
The humble, bespectacled man who guided Penn State football almost flawlessly for 46 seasons is gone after being forced out of a University he made his own. Read more >

High school football is something of a religion in the state of Georgia, but for the players that suit up every Friday night, eventually the games stop and the calendar turns to Saturday. The AT&T Georgia Junior Bowl was created by Rising Seniors to prepare high school junior student-athletes for their senior year and beyond, both on and off the field. Last year’s inaugural game featured young men who went on this autumn to have sensational senior years as some of the nation’s best prospects. After the success of the last game, many of the top 2013 prospects lined up for this year’s game. The talent-rich event has also attracted the attention of ESPN and will be presented live on ESPN 3.
